Roger Fry () est connu comme la figure centrale du groupe de Bloomsbury, défenseur du Post-impressionnisme et pionnier.Roger Fry () is best known as a champion of Post-Impressionism and a pioneer of Modernist art criticism. But his fi rst love was early Italian painting, on which he became a recognized authority, publishing a monograph on Giovanni Bellini in Roger Fry was a hugely influential figure in the development of modern art. Fry emphasised the importance of ‘form’, how a work looks, over 'content', what a work is about. He thought that artists should express their ideas and feelings through colour and arrangement of shapes rather than the subject. Fry was curator of paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, –10, but in the year he took up this appointment he ‘discovered’ Cézanne and turned his attention away from the Italian Old Masters, with whom he had established his scholarly reputation, to become his period's most eloquent champion of modern French painting.
